Aleppo, Syria – Syrian rebel fighters of Shamiya Front seized new areas in the northern countryside of Aleppo after fierce clashes with militants of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS), rebel sources reported on Thursday.
Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, Shamiya field commander Saleh Zein said that the Front fighters –supported by rebels of Ahrar al-Sham– were able to make progress against IS militants “after hitting Daesh (IS) headquarters with missiles”.
“Our (rebel) forces took control of five Daesh strongholds in the vicinity of Um al-Qura town in the northern countryside of Aleppo,” the source said.
“The operation started with targeting headquarters of Daesh in the area, then clashes broke out and continued until Thursday evening. We (rebels) were finally able to take control of five major positions north of Aleppo after the forced withdrawal of the radical group,” the Shamiya commander told ARA News.
The source confirmed the withdrawal of IS militants towards Soran Azaz town, which is considered a main stronghold for the radical group in the countryside of Aleppo.
“Our forces destroyed a heavy artillery that was used by Daesh during the clashes, and we seized a large deal of ammunition,” Zein said, without commenting on the death tolls.
